How Western Astrology Works

Western signs follow the seasons (tropical zodiac). The starting point is the March equinox, when day and night are roughly equal. Your chart shows planet signs and twelve life areas. It also shows the angles between planets.

We calculate positions with Swiss Ephemeris. Traditional mode uses seven classical planets and one sign per life area. Modern mode adds Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, and a planet-contact table. The sources include Ptolemy, Vettius Valens and William Lilly. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos describes five planet contacts: conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition.

Western vs Vedic Astrology

Western signs follow seasons; Vedic signs follow stars. Their starting points are roughly 24° apart. This is why your signs can differ. A Western planet at 15° Aries sits around 21° Pisces in a Vedic chart. The gap shifts roughly one degree every 72 years.

Two Ways to View Your Birth Chart

The Birth Chart Calculator offers traditional and modern modes.

Traditional mode uses seven planets and one sign per life area (whole-sign houses). Planet-strength readings cite Ptolemy, Valens or Lilly.

Modern mode uses time-based life-area divisions (Placidus houses) and ten planets. It includes the table of planet angles. Both modes use the same planet-position calculation and Western signs.

Above 66° north or south, Placidus divisions fail. For polar births, use traditional mode.
