Midheaven Calculator — Your MC Sign

The midheaven (MC, from medium coeli — 'middle of the sky') is the highest point of a birth chart: the sign culminating on the meridian at the exact moment of birth. In traditional astrology it is read for career, reputation and public standing, and it anchors the tenth house of the chart.

MC stands for medium coeli, Latin for 'middle of the sky'. It is the point where the sun's path crosses the meridian at your birth — the top of the chart wheel, opposite the IC. Astrologers read it for your public life: the work you are known for, your standing in the world and the direction your life 'peaks' toward.

The IC (imum caeli, 'bottom of the sky') is the point exactly opposite the midheaven — the lowest point of the chart at your birth moment. Traditional astrology reads it for home, family roots and private life, and it anchors the fourth house. If the MC is your public peak, the IC is the foundation it stands on.

The descendant (DSC) is the point exactly opposite the ascendant — the sign setting on the western horizon at your birth moment. In traditional astrology it is read as the 'other': the relationships and partnerships that balance your own rising sign, and the qualities you seek in people. It anchors the seventh house.

The ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon, and the midheaven is the sign culminating at the top of the sky — two different points of the same moment. The ascendant anchors the first house and how you come across; the midheaven anchors the tenth house and your public life. Both move quickly with time and place, so an exact birth time matters for both.

This tool uses the tropical zodiac, which measures signs from the equinoxes; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars with the ayanamsa — currently about 24 degrees of offset. Your tropical MC can therefore be about one sign ahead of the sidereal placement, and the same offset shifts every other point in the chart. Both systems are internally consistent; they just answer in different coordinates.
