About the three Samvats

Vikram Samvat is the most widely used Hindu calendar year, anchored to Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (roughly mid-March). It runs 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar.

Shaka Samvat is the official Indian national calendar year, used by the Government of India alongside Gregorian. It runs 78 years behind the Gregorian calendar.

Gujarati Samvat (also called Kartika Samvat) is the Diwali-anchored year, starting on Kartika Shukla Pratipada. It runs one year behind Vikram Samvat.

Samvatsara names come from the 60-year Brihaspati cycle described in Suryasiddhanta. Each name carries a governance deity that the muhurta tradition associates with the year’s tendencies.
