Solar Return Calculator — Your Birthday Chart (Tropical)

A solar return is the chart cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to the tropical degree it occupied at your birth. That moment happens once a year — around your birthday, give or take a day — and the chart cast for it is read as the chart of the year ahead: the return ascendant is the year's first house, and the return planets show where the year's themes fall.

The return moment is the same everywhere, but the chart cast for that moment is not: the ascendant and houses depend on the place. At the same return instant, charts for different cities can show different rising signs and different houses. The classical sources genuinely disagree on which place to use — traditional practice assumes the birth place, while modern practice often uses the place of residence. This tool casts the return at your birth location, the traditional default, and asks where you will be so the choice stays visible.

The engine computes the Sun's exact tropical longitude at your birth, then finds the first instant after your previous birthday when the Sun reaches that same longitude again — with Swiss Ephemeris, down to the second. Because the tropical year is about 365.242 days, the moment drifts by hours from one year to the next and can fall on a different calendar day.

The return chart is the sky at the return moment: the seven classical planets and the lunar nodes in their tropical signs, each in a whole-sign house counted from the return ascendant, plus the return ascendant and midheaven. Traditional practice reads it as the map of the coming year. This tool computes the return chart itself — the interpretation, such as comparing the return planets against your natal chart, is the work of a reading, not of this calculator.

The Sun still returns to your natal degree in a non-leap year — it is the degree, not the date, that matters. The engine searches for the exact moment near the date, and this tool seeds that search with 28 February of the return year, so the return moment is found correctly and can fall on 28 February or 1 March depending on the year.

Varshaphala is the Vedic annual chart: the same underlying idea — a chart cast for the Sun's return to its natal degree, read for the year ahead — but computed in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa and read with Vedic house and dasha techniques. This tool computes the tropical version, which Western astrology uses. The two zodiacs are offset by about 24 degrees, so the return ascendant and planets can differ by a sign between the two systems.
