Zodiacal Releasing Calculator — Hellenistic Period Technique

Zodiacal Releasing is the primary timing technique of Hellenistic astrology, preserved in Vettius Valens' Anthologies (Book IV). It divides a lifetime into periods — each period one sign of the zodiac — released from a lot, and each period is subdivided into four nested levels (L1 through L4). Where a static chart shows who you are, releasing dates when things happen: which sign's matters are at hand, and how long that chapter lasts. This calculator releases from the Lot of Fortune, in the tropical zodiac with whole-sign houses — the coordinates Valens himself used.

The two lots release parallel but different timers. The Lot of Fortune — computed from the Sun, Moon and ascendant, with the day and night formulas — rules the body, livelihood and material circumstances, so its periods time health, money and the practical affairs of life. The Lot of Spirit rules the mind, will, action and reputation, so its periods time career, decisions and the things you set out to do. Valens read both chains. This calculator computes the Fortune release — the chain Valens gives first and the one his period tables are built around; the peak places it marks include the ones Valens names for a Spirit release, so the Fortune chain is the standard starting point.

The releasing runs in four nested levels. The L1 periods are the broadest — often a decade or more each — and each L1 period is divided into shorter L2 periods, which divide into L3 periods, and finally L4 periods of days to weeks. Read from the top down: the L1 period frames the chapter of life you are in, and the finest active level names the present stretch of days and weeks. Peaks are places, not dates: Valens singles out certain signs counted from the Lot of Fortune — Fortune's own sign and the tenth from it above all — as peak places, and a releasing period that lands in one of them is read at full strength, often the most significant stretch of its level. The loosing of the bond is different: it marks the special transition where a long period breaks its own sequence and leaps to the opposite sign — in Valens' doctrine an unsettled, decisive change of chapter. Vedic timing systems such as Vimshottari dasha are sidereal: they work from the Moon's nakshatra, give each planet a fixed number of years, and order the periods in a planetary sequence. Zodiacal Releasing is Hellenistic and tropical: the periods are signs, not planets, their lengths follow the sign chain released from the two lots, and the rulers of the periods are the traditional lords of the signs. Both systems date the affairs of a life — they simply measure from different starting points and different coordinates, which is why your releasing periods will not match your dasha periods. You need your birth date, time and place — the lot is computed from the ascendant, so an exact birth time matters, and the place fixes the horizon.
