Annual Profections Calculator — Hellenistic Time-Lord Technique

Annual profections are a Hellenistic timing technique recorded by Vettius Valens in the 2nd century: each year of life, the ascendant advances one whole-sign house forward through the chart, activating a new house, its sign and that sign's ruler. Astrologers read the themes of the year through the activated house — the fifth house for romance and creativity, the tenth for career and public standing, and so on. This calculator works out your completed age and shows the activated house, sign and lord of the year.

The calculator counts your completed years of age from your birth date to the profection date you pick (today by default). Age 0 activates the first house — the ascendant — and each birthday moves the profection one whole-sign house forward: age 1 activates the second house, age 2 the third, and so on. After 12 years the wheel returns to the ascendant and the cycle begins again, so the activated house is simply the completed age wrapped around the 12-house wheel.

The lord of the year (also called the time lord) is the traditional ruler of the sign of the activated house — the classical pre-modern rulerships: the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius, and so on. In Hellenistic practice the time lord is one of the principal timers of the year: its sign, house and condition colour how the activated house's matters play out. The wheel is the full profection cycle drawn out: twelve cells, one per year of the cycle, each showing the age and the house it activates — age 0 at the first house (the ascendant), age 1 at the second, up to age 11 completing the twelfth house, then the wheel turns and age 12 lands back on the first house. The highlighted cell is the year you are in now; the house, sign and time lord shown above it are that year's activated slice of the chart.

Vedic dashas — the Vimshottari mahadasha being the most used — are fixed planetary periods: each planet rules a set number of years in a 120-year sequence starting from the Moon's nakshatra at birth, and the periods run regardless of age or house. Profections are a different timing engine: an annual house-by-house march from the ascendant that restarts every 12 years, with the lord of the year changing every birthday. Because the profection starts from the ascendant — the sign rising at the moment and place of your birth, which changes roughly every two hours. A wrong birth time gives the wrong rising sign, and the whole wheel, activated house and lord of the year shift with it. If you only know the date, the profection house sequence itself is unchanged, but the sign and time lord of each year cannot be determined; an approximate birth time is most risky near a sign boundary.
