What do the shastras say happens in Rahu mahadasha?
The texts give Rahu's period two faces. When Rahu is strong, BPHS lists wealth and grain, vehicles and a new house. It adds the birth of a son, festivities and honour from foreign rulers (BPHS 47.36-38). Phaladeepika speaks of Rahu with helpful planets in a good house. It gives king-like wealth, steady savings and fame (19.15).
When Rahu is weak, the same books are blunt. Phaladeepika lists fear of rulers and thieves, public blame, and lost post and place (19.14). Jataka Parijata adds life away from home and a mind drawn to disputes (18.95). How the 18 years are counted is explained on the main mahadasha page.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 34–43 (Maharishi ed.); Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 19, vv. 14-16, 21 (Rahu's period); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 95-108 (Rahu's period)
How mahadasha dates are calculatedWhen is Rahu mahadasha good, and when is it hard?
Count houses from your rising sign, not your Sun sign. BPHS gives royal favour and every comfort for Rahu in the 3rd or 11th. So does a central house (1, 4, 7, 10) or trine (1, 5, 9). The condition: helpful planets with it or looking at it, or a helpful sign (47.38-39). In the 8th or 12th it gives hardship. Tied to harsh planets, or in its fall sign, it brings loss of position. It also brings mental pain (47.40-41).
Signs matter too. Rahu is exalted in Taurus, with Gemini and Aquarius as its other strong signs (47.35-36). Jataka Parijata and Jyotish Ratnakar praise Rahu in Aries, Taurus or Cancer. It gives wealth, learning and honour (JP 18.105; JR para 328). In Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces they give status and comfort. But it slips away at the end of the period (JP 18.106). Phaladeepika says the same for Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces (19.16).
Rahu also copies the house it sits in and the house-lord it joins. Say it sits in a central house linked to a trine's lord, or the reverse. Then it becomes a yogakaraka, a planet that brings success (BPHS 34.16-17).
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 34–43 (Maharishi ed.); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 95-108 (Rahu's period); Jyotish Ratnakar, para 328, pp. 797-800 (Rahu's period by sign and house); Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 19, vv. 14-16, 21 (Rahu's period); BPHS ch. 34, vv. 16-17 (Maharishi ed.)
Rahu mahadasha effects in each house
Jyotish Ratnakar gives one result for each house Rahu can sit in (para 328). The 3rd and 11th are the clear winners. The 10th is good in a helpful sign and hard in a harsh one. The rest lean hard, so check for helpful planets with Rahu, as BPHS asks.
| House | What Rahu's period brings (Jyotish Ratnakar) |
|---|---|
| 1st | Muddled judgement, defeats, fear of fire and weapons |
| 2nd | Loss of money and standing, trouble with authority, a worried mind |
| 3rd | Comfort from family and siblings, honour from rulers, travel abroad |
| 4th | Loss of land and money, family worry, falls from vehicles |
| 5th | Confusion, lawsuits, worry over children |
| 6th | Fear from authority, fire and thieves; loss of friends; poor health |
| 7th | Strain in marriage, travel abroad, losses in money and farming |
| 8th | Trouble for spouse and children, fear of theft, harm from own family |
| 9th | Hard for father and teachers, travel abroad, money loss |
| 10th | Religious study and holy baths in a helpful sign; sorrow and life away in a harsh one |
| 11th | Honour, money, a house, land and many comforts |
| 12th | Wandering in many places, money worry, distance from family |
Textual basis: Jyotish Ratnakar, para 328, pp. 797-800 (Rahu's period by sign and house); BPHS ch. 47, vv. 34–43 (Maharishi ed.)
What happens at the start, middle and end of Rahu mahadasha?
Three books agree on the shape. BPHS says the start brings bodily strain and loss of wealth. The middle brings comfort and gains in your own country. The end brings hardship, loss of position and mental pain (47.42-43). Jataka Parijata says the same. Sorrow comes first, great happiness in the middle, a fall in status last (18.108). Jyotish Ratnakar repeats it (para 328).
People often ask about the last 6 years of Rahu mahadasha. Those years are the Venus, Sun, Moon and Mars sub-periods. They come to about 6 years 5 months in all. The texts' end-of-period warning falls on them. How hard they turn depends on where those four planets sit in your chart.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 34–43 (Maharishi ed.); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 95-108 (Rahu's period); Jyotish Ratnakar, para 328, pp. 797-800 (Rahu's period by sign and house)
Which antardasha in Rahu mahadasha is worst?
An antardasha is a smaller period inside the big one. Phaladeepika is harsh on five of them. Rahu-Saturn, Rahu-Ketu, Rahu-Sun, Rahu-Moon and Rahu-Mars bring quarrels, fear and loss (21.32-38). BPHS opens Rahu-Ketu with wandering and fear of authority (55.40). Rahu-Jupiter and Rahu-Mercury are the best in every book. (BPHS 55.8-12, 55.30-33; Phaladeepika 21.31, 21.33.)
BPHS still ties each sub-period to placement. The table gives its good and hard result for each one. They appear in the order they come.
| Sub-period | Length | Well placed | Badly placed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rahu-Rahu | 2y 8m 12d | In Cancer, Scorpio, Virgo or Sagittarius: honour, vehicles, business profit (55.1-4) | 8th or 12th with harsh planets: theft, injury, hostility at work (55.5-6) |
| Rahu-Jupiter | 2y 4m 24d | Higher position, courage, enemies beaten, steady growth (55.8-12) | Weak or in 6th/8th/12th: money loss, blocked work, loss of honour (55.13-14) |
| Rahu-Saturn | 2y 10m 6d | Service to those in power, weddings, gardens and tanks built (55.21-23) | Weak or 8th/12th: fear of rulers, family strain, quarrels in business (55.25-26) |
| Rahu-Mercury | 2y 6m 18d | Success, business income, learning, marriage festivities (55.30-33) | 6th/8th/12th: sudden quarrels, money loss, anger of those in power (55.36-38) |
| Rahu-Ketu | 1y 0m 18d | With helpful planets: comfort, income, honour (55.41) | Wandering, fear of authority, fevers; worse in the 8th (55.40-41) |
| Rahu-Venus | 3y | Gains through learned people, honour, a new house, marriage (55.46-51) | 6th/8th/12th or weak: illness, sudden quarrels, separations (55.51-53) |
| Rahu-Sun | 10m 24d | Favour from rulers, wealth, a small command (55.60-62) | 6th/8th/12th or weak: fevers, clashes with authority, enemies grow (55.64-65) |
| Rahu-Moon | 1y 6m | Status, money, health, family happiness; full Moon gives the full result (55.68-70) | 6th/8th/12th or weak: loss of house or land, danger on the road (55.73-74) |
| Rahu-Mars | 1y 0m 18d | Lost status and money regained, house and land grow (55.76-77) | 6th/8th/12th with harsh planets: family discord, loss of position (55.80-81) |
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 55, including remedy v. 19 (Maharishi ed.); Phaladeepika, ch. 21 (antardasha results; situation rule v. 84); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 95-108 (Rahu's period)
What remedies do the texts give for Rahu mahadasha?
BPHS ties each remedy to a difficult sub-period (ch. 55). For Rahu-Rahu it orders a shanti, a peace ritual done as prescribed (v. 7). For Rahu-Jupiter it gives Shiva worship and the gift of a gold image (v. 19). For Rahu-Mercury it gives the Vishnu Sahasranama, recited (v. 39).
For Rahu-Venus, BPHS names japa, repeated prayer, to Durga and Lakshmi (v. 59), so Durga worship in Rahu's period has a textual root. For Rahu-Sun it gives salutation to the Sun (v. 67). In a good Rahu-Moon it asks for worship of the Goddess (v. 72). We leave out the animal gifts some verses add.
Jyotish Ratnakar names a gold vessel as the gift for a harmful Rahu period. Its Rahu gift list is gomed, blue cloth, a blanket, sesame, oil and iron. Add 18,000 repetitions of Rahu's mantra (pp. 913-917).
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 55, including remedy v. 19 (Maharishi ed.); Jyotish Ratnakar, shanti section, pp. 913-919
Do the classical books agree about Rahu?
On timing, yes: all three put the hard parts at the start and the end. On houses, not fully. BPHS counts central houses as good when helpful planets join Rahu. Jyotish Ratnakar calls Rahu in the 4th and 7th hard without that condition. BPHS puts Rahu's moolatrikona, its next-strongest sign, in Gemini; Jyotish Ratnakar puts it in Cancer.
Saravali gives no results for Rahu's period at all. Its dasha chapters cover only the seven visible planets (ch. 40-41). This page follows BPHS and notes where the others add or differ.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 34–43 (Maharishi ed.); Jyotish Ratnakar, para 328, pp. 797-800 (Rahu's period by sign and house); Saravali, Kalyanavarma, ch. 40-41 (dasha chapters; seven planets only)
How long is each antardasha in Rahu mahadasha?
A full 18-year period holds nine sub-periods. The first belongs to Rahu itself. Each length is the main period's years × the sub-period's years ÷ 120. The dasha calculator gives your own dates.
| Sub-period | Length | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Rahu | 2y 8.4m | 18 × 18 ÷ 120 |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 2y 4.8m | 18 × 16 ÷ 120 |
| Saturn (Shani) | 2y 10.2m | 18 × 19 ÷ 120 |
| Mercury (Budh) | 2y 6.6m | 18 × 17 ÷ 120 |
| Ketu | 1y 0.6m | 18 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Venus (Shukra) | 3y | 18 × 20 ÷ 120 |
| Sun (Surya) | 10.8m | 18 × 6 ÷ 120 |
| Moon (Chandra) | 1y 6m | 18 × 10 ÷ 120 |
| Mars (Mangal) | 1y 0.6m | 18 × 7 ÷ 120 |

Example chart — illustrative, not a real person
How do you find the balance left at birth?
Take the Moon at 193°20′ sidereal longitude. Swati runs from 186°40′ to 200°00′. The Moon has covered 6°40′ of the 13°20′ star. Half remains. Rahu's birth balance is 18 × 0.5 = 9 years. Jupiter's full 16-year period follows. This is a lunar-position example, not a person's prediction.
These are the texts' rules; your own birth chart and an accurate birth time decide which of them apply to you.
Frequently asked
Are all 18 years of Rahu mahadasha bad?
No. BPHS gives wealth, a new house and foreign honours for a well-placed Rahu. That means the 3rd, 11th, or a central house or trine with helpful planets (47.36-39). BPHS and Jataka Parijata both make the middle years the best part (47.43; 18.108).
How long is Rahu mahadasha?
18 years in full. It starts at birth only if your Moon is in Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha. Then you get only the unused part (BPHS ch. 46). It opens with Rahu-Rahu, 2 years 8 months 12 days, and closes with Rahu-Mars.
What are the last 6 years of Rahu mahadasha like?
They cover the Venus, Sun, Moon and Mars sub-periods. BPHS says the period's end brings hardship, loss of position and mental pain (47.43). Phaladeepika is harsh on Rahu-Sun, Rahu-Moon and Rahu-Mars (21.36-38). It is mixed on Rahu-Venus (21.35).
Can marriage happen in Rahu mahadasha?
Yes. BPHS lists weddings and celebrations in a well-placed Rahu-Saturn (55.22). It lists them in Rahu-Mercury (55.32, 55.35) and Rahu-Venus (55.51) too. The sub-period planet has to be well placed in your chart.
Does Rahu mahadasha bring foreign travel?
Often. BPHS lists honour from foreign rulers in a strong Rahu period (47.38, 47.40). Jataka Parijata names life abroad (18.95). Jyotish Ratnakar gives travel abroad for Rahu in the 3rd, 7th or 9th. It gives wandering for the 12th (para 328).
What comes after Rahu mahadasha?
Jupiter's 16-year period follows, opening with Jupiter-Jupiter. The calculator above shows the exact changeover date for your chart.
