What do the shastras say Ketu mahadasha brings?
Most books start harsh. Jataka Parijata calls Ketu's period a time of poor judgement and ailments. It allows only a little happiness (18.144). Phaladeepika lists trouble from enemies and rulers, and false blame. It adds leaving one's own country (19.17). It also adds grief and confusion through women, and loss of money (19.25).
The same books turn when Ketu has good company. Jataka Parijata says Ketu with helpful planets gives happiness. Ketu seen by them gives great wealth (18.154). Jyotish Ratnakar says helpful aspects on Ketu bring money from the state. They also bring peace at home and a steady mind (para 332). How the 7 years are counted is on the main mahadasha page.
Textual basis: Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 144-156 (Ketu's period); Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 19, vv. 17, 25 (Ketu's period); Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 332 (Ketu)
How mahadasha dates are calculatedWhen does Ketu mahadasha give good results?
BPHS is specific. Ketu may sit in a central house, a trine, the 11th or a helpful sign. It may be seen by helpful planets, or exalted in Scorpio. Then it gives the favour of those in power. It gives charge of a district or village (47.72-73). It also gives vehicles, a son, and pleasant journeys to other lands. Ketu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives happiness (47.74).
The hard places are the 2nd, 8th and 12th with harsh planets. There Ketu brings loss of position, trouble for relatives and mental pain. Gains come only through low company (47.76-77). Ketu also takes on the results of its house and of the house-lord it joins. In a central house linked to a trine's lord, it becomes a yogakaraka. That is a planet that brings success (BPHS 34.16-17).

Ketu mahadasha effects in each house
Jyotish Ratnakar gives one result per house (para 332). It agrees with BPHS on the 3rd and 11th. It disagrees on the 6th, which BPHS calls happy and Jyotish Ratnakar calls fearful. It also reads the central houses as hard, where BPHS wants helpful planets first.
| House | What Ketu's period brings (Jyotish Ratnakar) |
|---|---|
| 1st | Many worries and health troubles |
| 2nd | Money loss, harsh speech, poor food, sorrow |
| 3rd | Much happiness, but friction with siblings |
| 4th | Less comfort, worry for family, yet gains of land and a house |
| 5th | Worry over children, a confused mind, money lost to the state |
| 6th | Fear of theft and fire; debt |
| 7th | Fear, strain for spouse and children |
| 8th | Hard for father; health strain |
| 9th | Trouble for father and teacher; good works fall away |
| 10th | Loss of honour, money worry, a bad name |
| 11th | Happiness, joy for siblings, an urge to give |
| 12th | Loss of position, life away, trouble from authority |

What happens at the start, middle and end of Ketu mahadasha?
Here the books disagree. BPHS says the period opens with success and power. Great fear comes in the middle. It ends with long travel and a tired body (47.75-76). Jataka Parijata says the reverse. Trouble for elders and relatives comes first, then income in the middle. Happiness comes at the end (18.156).
Jyotish Ratnakar records both. Its main text follows the BPHS shape: comfort, then fear, then worry at the end. It then gives the Jataka Parijata order as a second opinion (para 332). All three agree Ketu's 7 years do not run the same from start to finish.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 71–77 (Maharishi ed.); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 144-156 (Ketu's period); Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 332 (Ketu)
Why do people call Ketu mahadasha spiritual?
Partly from the texts, partly from popular use. Jyotish Ratnakar says Rahu is better for worldly results. But Ketu is stronger in giving mukti, liberation (para 332). BPHS gives several Ketu sub-periods a religious turn. Ketu-Venus brings holy baths and the sight of deities (59.9). Ketu-Jupiter brings pilgrimage (59.53). Ketu-Mercury brings sacred stories and charity (59.70).
What the texts do not say is that Ketu's period makes everyone renounce the world. The strongest liberation rule is a birth-chart rule from the Jaimini tradition. It needs Ketu in the 12th from the soul planet's navamsa sign, with helpful aspects. It is not a dasha rule (Jaimini Sutram 1.2.79, commentary).

Which antardasha in Ketu mahadasha is worst?
Phaladeepika calls Ketu-Saturn a very bad sub-period. It brings loss of staff, quarrels, and loss of place and money (21.73). Ketu-Mars and Ketu-Rahu are harsh in Phaladeepika and Jataka Parijata alike (PD 21.70-71; JP 18.149-150). Ketu-Jupiter is the best in every book. It gives a son, worship, land, savings and honour (PD 21.72; JP 18.151; BPHS 59.51-54).
BPHS still makes each sub-period depend on placement, as the table shows. For example, Ketu-Saturn turns good with Saturn in Libra, Pisces or its own sign (59.63-65).
| Sub-period | Length | Well placed | Badly placed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ketu-Ketu | 4m 27d | Central house, trine or 11th with the rising-sign lord: money, grain, land, family comfort (59.1-3) | With a weak planet or in 8th/12th: loss of honour and money, family strain, a restless mind (59.3-4) |
| Ketu-Venus | 1y 2m | Exalted, own sign or central house: favour, luck, lost wealth regained, holy baths (59.7-9) | 6th/8th/12th with harsh planets: sudden quarrels, loss of cattle and grain (59.12-14) |
| Ketu-Sun | 4m 6d | Exalted, own sign or central house: money, favour from rulers, good works (59.16-17) | 8th/12th with harsh planets: fear of authority, distance from parents, fines (59.18-19) |
| Ketu-Moon | 7m | Favour, land, business profit, temples and tanks built (59.25-28) | Waning or 6th/8th/12th: mental pain, blocked work, distance from parents (59.29-30) |
| Ketu-Mars | 4m 27d | Central house or trine: good start, land, money, cattle, gardens (59.37-39) | 8th/12th: trouble abroad, quarrels (59.41-42) |
| Ketu-Rahu | 1y 0m 18d | Exalted or central house: money, travel, help from foreign patrons; hard start, then comfort (59.45-47) | 8th/12th with harsh planets: chills and fever, sudden quarrels (59.48-49) |
| Ketu-Jupiter | 11m 6d | With the rising-sign lord: money, favour, a son, pilgrimage, success (59.51-54) | 6th/8th/12th or weak: losses, separation; good start, hard end (59.55-56) |
| Ketu-Saturn | 1y 1m 9d | In Libra, Pisces or own sign, central house or trine: all aims met, pleasant travel (59.63-65) | Generally strain, family worry, loss of place, danger on the road (59.61-62) |
| Ketu-Mercury | 11m 27d | Central house or trine: authority, happiness, charity, land, a son, marriage (59.69-71) | 6th/8th/12th with Saturn, Mars or Rahu: clashes with officials, living in another's house, losses (59.73-74) |

What remedies do the texts give for Ketu mahadasha?
Durga japa, repeated prayer to Durga, is the remedy BPHS repeats most for Ketu. It comes in Ketu-Ketu, Ketu-Venus and Ketu-Rahu (59.6, 59.15, 59.50). Ketu-Ketu also gets Mrityunjaya japa (59.6). Ketu-Jupiter gets the Shiva Sahasranama and the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra (59.60).
Ketu-Sun gets a shanti and a gift of gold (59.24). Ketu-Moon gets a shanti that pleases the Moon (59.36). Ketu-Saturn gets a sesame fire offering (59.68), and Ketu-Mercury the Vishnu Sahasranama (59.79). We leave out the animal gifts some verses add.
Jyotish Ratnakar names a silver vessel as the gift for a harmful Ketu period. Its Ketu gifts are cat's eye, sesame, oil, a blanket, black flowers and black cloth. It adds 17,000 repetitions of Ketu's mantra (pp. 913-917).

How long is each antardasha in Ketu mahadasha?
A full 7-year period holds nine sub-periods. The first belongs to Ketu itself. Each length is the main period's years × the sub-period's years ÷ 120. The dasha calculator gives your own dates.
| Sub-period | Length | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 4.9m | 7 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Venus (Shukra) | 1y 2m | 7 × 20 ÷ 120 |
| Sun (Surya) | 4.2m | 7 × 6 ÷ 120 |
| Moon (Chandra) | 7m | 7 × 10 ÷ 120 |
| Mars (Mangal) | 4.9m | 7 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Rahu | 1y 0.6m | 7 × 18 ÷ 120 |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 11.2m | 7 × 16 ÷ 120 |
| Saturn (Shani) | 1y 1.3m | 7 × 19 ÷ 120 |
| Mercury (Budh) | 11.9m | 7 × 17 ÷ 120 |

How do you find the balance left at birth?
Take the Moon at 130° sidereal longitude in Magha. The star begins at 120° and ends at 133°20′. Ten degrees have passed. One quarter remains. Ketu's birth balance is 7 × 0.25 = 1.75 years. Venus's full 20-year period follows.
These are the texts' rules; your own birth chart and an accurate birth time decide which of them apply to you.
Frequently asked
Is Ketu mahadasha good or bad?
It depends on placement and company. BPHS covers Ketu in a central house, trine, the 11th, 3rd or 6th. There it gives favour from those in power, land, vehicles and travel (47.72-74). In the 2nd, 8th or 12th with harsh planets, it brings lost position. It also brings mental pain (47.76-77).
How long is Ketu mahadasha?
7 years; only the Sun's period, at 6, is shorter. It starts at birth only for a Moon in Ashwini, Magha or Mula (BPHS ch. 46). It opens with Ketu-Ketu, about 5 months, and ends with Ketu-Mercury.
Does Ketu mahadasha make a person spiritual?
The texts link Ketu to liberation (Jyotish Ratnakar, para 332). BPHS gives pilgrimage and charity in some Ketu sub-periods (59.9, 59.53, 59.70). No verse here says the period by itself makes a person renounce. That idea is popular usage.
Which antardasha in Ketu mahadasha is best?
Ketu-Jupiter. Phaladeepika gives a fine son, worship, land, money and honour from the ruler (21.72). Jataka Parijata agrees (18.151). BPHS adds pilgrimage and success when Jupiter is well placed (59.51-54).
Does Ketu mahadasha bring foreign travel?
Yes, in most books. BPHS gives pleasant journeys to other lands for a strong Ketu (47.73). It adds long travel at the end of the period (47.76). Phaladeepika speaks of leaving one's own country (19.17, 19.25).
What comes after Ketu mahadasha?
Venus's 20-year period, the longest of all, opening with Venus-Venus. Jataka Parijata puts happiness at the end of Ketu's period (18.156), just before Venus begins. The calculator above shows the exact date for your chart.
