Is Mangal mahadasha good or bad?
A strong Mars makes this a period of gains through effort. Parashara names Mars's best places. These are Capricorn (its best sign), and Aries or Scorpio (its own signs). They also include the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses. Such a Mars, strong and seen by good planets, gives a higher post and land. It gives wealth and grain. It brings honour, vehicles, a position abroad and happiness from brothers. In the 3rd, or in any angle house, Mars earns money through courage. It also wins fights.
A weak Mars gives the opposite. Take Mars in Cancer (its weakest sign), in a bad house, or with harsh planets. Parashara says plainly that the period is not favourable. Saravali spells it out: friction with friends and spouse, and fights with brothers and children. It adds cuts and wounds, and illnesses of blood and bile.

What does Mars rule, and which parts of life does its period touch?
Parashara calls Mars strength and courage and names it the commander among planets. From Mars he reads sisters, younger siblings and brothers-in-law. Mantreshwar too gives Mars the younger brother.
So Mars's years are about drive, rivals, siblings and property. Saravali says a good Mars period earns through rulers, fire and beating rivals. It also earns through weapons, land and trade in copper and gold. Varahamihira and Mantreshwar agree. The good side brings land, cattle and wins over enemies. The hard side brings quarrels with children, spouse, brothers and teachers.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 3, vv. 12–13 (Maharishi ed.); BPHS ch. 32, v. 19 (Maharishi ed.); Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 2, v. 25; Saravali, Kalyanavarma, ch. 40, vv. 33–36, 68; Brihat Jataka, Varahamihira, ch. 8, v. 14; Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 19 (including balance v. 3)
Mangal mahadasha effects in each house
Count houses from your rising sign (lagna). Jyotish Ratnakar gives a result for most houses. Here the books clash. Parashara reads Mars in any angle house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) as good. It brings money through courage and victory. Jyotish Ratnakar reads angle houses as quarrels and enmity. It reads the 4th and 10th as losses. Both agree that the 3rd and 11th are the best houses for Mars's period.
| House | What the texts say for Mars's period |
|---|---|
| 1st | Money through courage, victory (Parashara); quarrels and enmity (Jyotish Ratnakar) |
| 2nd | Family wealth, farming, prosperity; trouble with authority |
| 3rd | Joy, courage, success with authority, money, family happiness |
| 4th | Loss of place, friction with relatives, fear of fire and theft |
| 5th | Hard on children, confused thinking |
| 6th | Not listed; Parashara counts the 6th as a hard house for any period |
| 7th | Hard on the spouse, unless an exalted planet joins Mars |
| 8th | Sorrow, fear, loss of place, travel abroad |
| 9th | Change or loss of post, trouble for teachers |
| 10th | Setbacks at work and loss of name (Jyotish Ratnakar); victory (Parashara) |
| 11th | Honour, money, comfort, wins in fights, fame |
| 12th | Money loss, fear of officials, loss of land |
Textual basis: Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 327, pp. 792–797 (Mars); BPHS ch. 47, vv. 27–33 (Maharishi ed.); BPHS ch. 47, vv. 3–4, 6 (Maharishi ed.)
What if Mars is exalted, in its own sign, debilitated or retrograde?
Jyotish Ratnakar gives the sign results plainly. An exalted Mars brings a high post or money from authority and a happy family. Mars in its own sign brings money, land, authority, vehicles and happy brothers. In Capricorn, wealth grows to the family's level, with wins in disputes, gold and gems.
There is one reversal. Take a debilitated Mars sitting in its exaltation navamsa (the ninth-part chart). Jataka Parijata and Jyotish Ratnakar both say it gives farmland, wealth, grain and happiness.
A retrograde Mars changes the picture. Saravali says a retrograde harsh planet's period spins you around like a potter's wheel. It brings travel, bad habits and fights with rivals. Jyotish Ratnakar adds loss of post. Parashara also flips the timing order for a retrograde planet.
Textual basis: Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 327, pp. 792–797 (Mars); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 83–94; Saravali, Kalyanavarma, ch. 40, vv. 33–36, 68; BPHS ch. 47, vv. 3–4, 6 (Maharishi ed.)
What happens at the start, middle and end of Mars mahadasha?
Here the two main books disagree. Parashara speaks of a Mars in an angle house or strong in the 3rd. He says it gives happiness early in the period and trouble at the end. Jataka Parijata says the reverse at first. Loss of honour and money comes at the start. Then fear from officials, fire and thieves comes in the middle and at the end.
Parashara's timing rule adds a third view. If Mars sits in the first 10° of its sign, its results come early. In the middle 10° they come mid-period, and in the last 10°, late. If Mars is retrograde, that order runs backward.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 27–33 (Maharishi ed.); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 83–94; BPHS ch. 47, vv. 3–4, 6 (Maharishi ed.)
Which antardasha in Mangal mahadasha is worst?
Mars-Saturn is the worst, and all three books agree. Saravali calls it trouble piled on trouble. Jataka Parijata says it brings much sorrow and loss of money. Mars-Rahu comes next. Jataka Parijata gives fear from officials and thieves and loss of wealth. Parashara agrees when Rahu sits in the 8th or 12th.
Mars-Jupiter is the best, again in all three books: honour, victory, good deeds and happiness. Mars-Moon is also strong, and Parashara says a full Moon gives the full result. Sub-period lengths follow the standard rule on the mahadasha page.
| Sub-period | Length | What the texts say |
|---|---|---|
| Mars-Mars | about 5 months | Lost position and money regained, more house and land if Mars is strong |
| Mars-Rahu | about 1 year | Honour, land and business profit if strong; fear and losses in the 8th or 12th |
| Mars-Jupiter | about 11 months | Fame, honour, wealth, family happiness (all books) |
| Mars-Saturn | about 1 year 1 month | Trouble piled on trouble, loss of money (all books) |
| Mars-Mercury | about 1 year | Good name and charity if well placed; fear of enemies (Saravali) |
| Mars-Ketu | about 5 months | Favour of authority and land if strong; quarrels if badly placed |
| Mars-Venus | 1 year 2 months | High post and vehicles in good houses (Parashara); conflict and loss (Saravali) |
| Mars-Sun | about 4 months | Vehicles, fame, business profit; Jataka Parijata warns of quarrels with elders |
| Mars-Moon | 7 months | High post, marriage celebrations, family joy; full results with a full Moon |

How mahadasha and sub-periods are calculatedFor which rising signs is Mars mahadasha good?
Mars is at its best as a yogakaraka. Such a planet rules both a good angle house and a good luck house. Parashara names Mars the full yogakaraka for Cancer rising. He counts it good for Leo and Sagittarius rising. For Pisces rising, Mars with Jupiter forms a yoga. For Aries rising, Mars helps even though it also owns the 8th house.
For Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, Parashara counts Mars as a harmful lord. For Scorpio rising he counts it neutral. Jyotish Ratnakar sums it up. Mars is good as lord of an angle or luck house. It is bad as lord of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th.

Remedies for a difficult Mangal mahadasha
Parashara's main remedy for Mars is Rudra japa, a prayer to Shiva. He says Mars is pleased through Shiva's grace. For Mars-Rahu he gives Naga puja, feeding Brahmins and Mrityunjaya japa. He gives Shiva Sahasranama in Mars-Jupiter and Mrityunjaya japa in Mars-Saturn. He gives Vishnu Sahasranama in Mars-Mercury. In Mars-Moon he gives Durga and Lakshmi japa.
Jyotish Ratnakar advises gifting a copper lotus for a hard Mars period. Its gifts for Mars are coral, wheat, masoor dal, jaggery and gold. Red cloth, red kaner flowers and copper also count. Add 11,000 repetitions of Mars's mantra. For Mars-Mars it gives Subrahmanya japa, where Parashara gives Rudra japa.

How long is each antardasha in Mars mahadasha?
A full 7-year period holds nine sub-periods. The first belongs to Mars itself. Each length is the main period's years × the sub-period's years ÷ 120. The dasha calculator gives your own dates.
| Sub-period | Length | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Mars (Mangal) | 4.9m | 7 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Rahu | 1y 0.6m | 7 × 18 ÷ 120 |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 11.2m | 7 × 16 ÷ 120 |
| Saturn (Shani) | 1y 1.3m | 7 × 19 ÷ 120 |
| Mercury (Budh) | 11.9m | 7 × 17 ÷ 120 |
| Ketu | 4.9m | 7 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Venus (Shukra) | 1y 2m | 7 × 20 ÷ 120 |
| Sun (Surya) | 4.2m | 7 × 6 ÷ 120 |
| Moon (Chandra) | 7m | 7 × 10 ÷ 120 |

How do you find the balance left at birth?
Take the Moon at 60° in Mrigashira. The star spans 53°20′–66°40′. Half remains. Mars's birth balance is 7 × 0.5 = 3.5 years. Rahu's full 18 years follow.
These are the classical rules for Mars's period; your own result depends on the whole birth chart and an accurate birth time.
Frequently asked
Does Mangal mahadasha bring land and property?
Yes, when Mars is strong. Parashara names land among the first gains of a strong Mars (BPHS 47.29). Mantreshwar gives cattle and fields (Phaladeepika 19.20). A debilitated Mars in its exaltation navamsa also gives farmland (Jataka Parijata 18.94).
Is Mars mahadasha good for marriage?
A strong angle-house or 3rd-house Mars helps spouse and children prosper (BPHS 47.32). The Mars-Moon sub-period names marriage celebrations (BPHS 54.72). A weak Mars brings friction with the spouse instead (Saravali 40.35).
Is Mangal mahadasha the same as manglik dosha?
No. The mahadasha is a 7-year time period that follows your birth star. Manglik dosha is a fixed feature of the birth chart. It is read from Mars's house and is checked separately.
Which is the worst antardasha in Mangal mahadasha?
Mars-Saturn. Saravali calls it trouble piled on trouble (41.29). Jataka Parijata gives sorrow and loss of money (18.87).
What comes after Mars mahadasha?
Rahu's 18-year mahadasha always follows Mars's (BPHS 46.12). Mars's own period comes after the Moon's.
