What happens in Guru mahadasha, according to the shastras?
Jupiter is the planet of knowledge, children, teachers, faith and money (Phaladeepika 2.5). Its 16 years turn your life toward these things. A strong Jupiter gives a rise in position and honour from people in power. It gives a vehicle and joy from spouse and children (BPHS 47.46–48). It also brings religious rites, scripture study and a love of feeding others. Saravali 40.41–43 adds money through advice and counsel, and a growing circle of friends.
The other books agree on the core. Phaladeepika 19.11 names success with children and praise among important people. Jataka Parijata 18.109 adds a new post, a clear mind and good conduct. How the dates are worked out is explained once on the mahadasha hub.
Textual basis: Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 2, v. 5; BPHS ch. 47, vv. 44–51 (Maharishi ed.); Saravali, Kalyanavarma, ch. 40, vv. 41–44, 68; Phaladeepika, ch. 19, vv. 11, 22; Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 109–119
How mahadasha dates are calculatedWhen is Jupiter mahadasha good, and when is it bad?
BPHS 47.45 makes Jupiter strong in Cancer, its best sign. It is also strong in Sagittarius or Pisces, its own signs. Houses 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11 also make it strong. BPHS 47.49–50 makes Jupiter weak in Capricorn or when lost in the Sun's glare. It is also weak with harsh planets, or in the 8th or 12th house. Then it gives loss of position, worry, trouble over children, fear and money loss. The verse names the 8th and 12th, not the 6th.
Saravali 40.44 adds grief, lost comforts and fear of authority in a bad Jupiter period. Jataka Parijata 18.119 covers Jupiter in Cancer but in a weak navamsa (the ninth-part chart). That Jupiter brings fear and family discord. Jupiter in Capricorn but in a strong navamsa brings favour, learning and fame.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 44–51 (Maharishi ed.); BPHS ch. 3, vv. 49–53 (Maharishi ed.); Saravali, Kalyanavarma, ch. 40, vv. 41–44, 68; Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 109–119; Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 329 (Jupiter), pp. 800–806
Jupiter mahadasha effects in each house
Jyotish Ratnakar lists Jupiter's period house by house. Count the houses from your rising sign (lagna), not from your Moon sign. Read each line together with Jupiter's strength from the section above.
| House | What the text says |
|---|---|
| 1st | Comfort, good clothes and ornaments; public honour |
| 2nd | Honour and money; speaks well in gatherings; land through family or authority |
| 3rd | Money through a brother; comfort from people in power |
| 4th | Favour from authority and vehicles; with a success combination (raj yoga), real authority |
| 5th | Birth of children, honour, love of mantra and scripture |
| 6th | Health and family gains early; illness, theft and fear later |
| 7th | Happiness from spouse and children, travel abroad, success |
| 8th | Comfort first, then loss of position, travel and separation; honour returns at the end |
| 9th | Not listed alone; as a trine house: wealth, family happiness, good food, vehicles |
| 10th | Wealth or a high post, family happiness, good works, authority |
| 11th | Wealth or position and a son's birth; the text also notes ill-will from authority and relatives |
| 12th | Many troubles and travel abroad, but comfort from vehicles |
Textual basis: Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 329 (Jupiter), pp. 800–806
Is Guru mahadasha good for every rising sign?
No. BPHS 34 judges Jupiter by the houses it rules for your rising sign. It makes Jupiter helpful for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio and Pisces rising. For Pisces it is a yoga-giver, a planet that brings real success (34.43). It is neutral for Sagittarius. It is difficult for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius rising.
BPHS 34.10 adds a rule that hits Jupiter and Venus hardest. Natural good planets ruling a central house (1, 4, 7 or 10) lose goodness. The fault is strongest for Venus, then Jupiter. Laghu Parashari (stanza 9) says the same. Such a Jupiter in the 2nd or 7th turns harmful in its period. So a Gemini or Virgo rising person should not expect the textbook Guru period.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 34, vv. 8–10, 19–44 (Maharishi ed.); Laghu Parashari (Jataka Chandrika), stanzas 9–10, B. S. Row tr., 1900
How does Jupiter mahadasha go from start to finish?
The texts give two patterns. For a weak Jupiter, BPHS 47.51 puts the hardship at the start. Comfort, honour and wealth come in the middle and end. Jyotish Ratnakar 329 splits the period into thirds. Joy and respect come first, then family happiness. The last third brings trouble and work loss.
Ratnakar also says an exalted Jupiter gives money and honour near the period's end. So the books disagree on the last years. Jupiter's strength in your chart settles it.

Which antardasha in Guru mahadasha is best, and which is hard?
BPHS ch. 56 gives each sub-period a good result when that planet is well placed. It gives a hard one when that planet sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Jataka Parijata 18.110–118 gives one verdict each; the table shows both.
The books split on a few. Jupiter–Venus is good in BPHS 56.39–42 and Phaladeepika 21.43, but bad in Saravali 41.41. Jupiter–Rahu is hard in Jataka Parijata and Phaladeepika 21.47. Yet BPHS 56.72–75 allows gains when Rahu is well placed. Phaladeepika 21.41 and Saravali 41.39–40 even record two opposite views of Jupiter–Mercury.
| Sub-period | Length | BPHS 56: good / hard | Jataka Parijata 18 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | 2y 1m 18d | Strong: authority, a new home, family gains. Weak: kin disputes, money loss | Favour, success, learning |
| Saturn | 2y 6m 12d | Strong: position, land, vehicles. In 6/8/12: losses, fever, family strain | Hostile mood, money spent on a son, work lost |
| Mercury | 2y 3m 6d | Strong: money, comfort, favour; good start, losses at the end | Money through trade, favour |
| Ketu | 11m 6d | Small gains; badly placed: anger of authority, losses | Pearls, pilgrimage, money |
| Venus | 2y 8m | Well placed: vehicles, profits, pious works. Weak: quarrels, trouble with in-laws | Vehicles and wealth, but strain for the wife |
| Sun | 9m 18d | Strong: money, honour, children. In 8/12: fever, sudden quarrels | Victory, comfort, health |
| Moon | 1y 4m | Strong: honour, family joy, fame. Weak: loss of honour, mother's trouble | Prosperity, favour, fine clothes |
| Mars | 11m 6d | Strong: learning, marriage events, land. Weak: losses; first half hard, second half happy | Work loss, wandering, fear |
| Rahu | 2y 4m 24d | Well placed: gains in the first five months, long journeys. Badly placed: fear, family disputes | All-round trouble and money loss |

How antardasha lengths are worked outWhat remedies do the shastras give for a hard Guru period?
BPHS 84 gives Jupiter's own worship. Its Vedic mantra is the one beginning Brihaspate, repeated 19,000 times (84.17–20). The fire offering uses peepal wood. Brahmins are fed curd rice, and the gift is cloth (84.21–25). Verse 84.26 says to worship whichever planet is badly placed at that time.
BPHS ch. 56 adds remedies for hard sub-periods. Jupiter–Jupiter calls for Shiva sahasranama (a prayer of a thousand names) (56.7). It also calls for Rudra japa (repeated prayer). Vishnu sahasranama comes in Jupiter–Saturn and Jupiter–Mercury (56.18, 56.31). Aditya Hridaya is for Jupiter–Sun (56.57). Durga path is for Jupiter–Moon (56.64). Mrityunjaya japa is for Jupiter–Ketu and Jupiter–Rahu (56.38, 56.79). The verses also list animal gifts, which we leave out.

How long is each antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha?
A full 16-year period holds nine sub-periods. The first belongs to Jupiter itself. Each length is the main period's years × the sub-period's years ÷ 120. The dasha calculator gives your own dates.
| Sub-period | Length | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter (Guru) | 2y 1.6m | 16 × 16 ÷ 120 |
| Saturn (Shani) | 2y 6.4m | 16 × 19 ÷ 120 |
| Mercury (Budh) | 2y 3.2m | 16 × 17 ÷ 120 |
| Ketu | 11.2m | 16 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Venus (Shukra) | 2y 8m | 16 × 20 ÷ 120 |
| Sun (Surya) | 9.6m | 16 × 6 ÷ 120 |
| Moon (Chandra) | 1y 4m | 16 × 10 ÷ 120 |
| Mars (Mangal) | 11.2m | 16 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Rahu | 2y 4.8m | 16 × 18 ÷ 120 |

Example chart — illustrative, not a real person
How do you find the balance left at birth?
Take the Moon at 86°40′ in Punarvasu. The star spans 80°00′–93°20′. Half remains. Jupiter's birth balance is 16 × 0.5 = 8 years. Saturn's full 19-year period follows.
These are the texts' results by Jupiter's strength; your own chart decides which apply, and a wrong birth time can shift the dates.
Frequently asked
Is Guru mahadasha good for marriage?
Usually, when Jupiter is strong. BPHS 47.47 promises happiness from spouse and children. BPHS 56.66 names marriage events in the Jupiter–Mars sub-period.
Is retrograde Jupiter mahadasha bad?
No, not by the texts. Jyotish Ratnakar 329 gives a retrograde Jupiter victory and friends in power. It also gives money and family happiness. Saravali 40.68 says a retrograde planet's restless results apply to harsh planets. They do not apply to good ones like Jupiter.
What if Jupiter is debilitated in my chart?
Jupiter in Capricorn is the weak case of BPHS 47.49–50. It brings loss of position, worry and money trouble. Jataka Parijata 18.119 softens it. If that Jupiter sits in a strong navamsa, the period brings favour, learning and fame.
Does Jupiter mahadasha give children?
Children are one of Jupiter's main results. BPHS 47.47 and 47.49 name the gain of children. Phaladeepika 19.11 names success with children. BPHS 32.23 judges children from the 5th house counted from Jupiter. A weak Jupiter brings worry about children instead (47.50).
Which mantra is chanted in Guru mahadasha?
BPHS 84.17 gives Jupiter's Vedic mantra beginning Brihaspate, with 19,000 repetitions (84.19–20).
