What happens in Budh mahadasha, according to the shastras?
Mercury is the planet of learning, good speech and clever talk. It also rules crafts, friends and relatives (Phaladeepika 2.4). A strong Mercury makes its 17 years a time of earning through trade. Knowledge grows and fame is good. It brings favour from people in power, good health and a happy family (BPHS 47.63–64).
Saravali 40.37–39 adds money through friends, the wealthy and traders. It adds work as a go-between, and a love of maths, writing and scripts. Phaladeepika 19.10 adds praise from learned people and a sharp tongue. Jataka Parijata 18.132 names money from the gold trade and help from elders and friends. How the dates are worked out is explained once on the mahadasha hub.
Textual basis: Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 2, v. 4; BPHS ch. 47, vv. 61–70 (Maharishi ed.); Saravali, ch. 40, vv. 37–40, 68; Phaladeepika, ch. 19, vv. 10, 24; Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 132–143
How mahadasha dates are calculatedWhen is Mercury mahadasha good, and when is it bad?
BPHS 47.62 makes Mercury strong in Virgo, Gemini or a friend's sign. It is also strong in houses 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 or 11. It may also rule the 9th or 10th, with a good planet looking at it. Then the period gives full results (47.65). Mercury also takes on the nature of its company. With harsh planets it turns harsh (BPHS 3.11, Saravali 4.9).
Harsh planets may join or aspect Mercury. Then it brings displeasure of authority, mental strain and quarrels with relatives. It also brings travel abroad and working under others (BPHS 47.66–67). In the 6th, 8th or 12th it brings lost income and savings, and ill health. It brings fear of authority, thieves and fire. Land and farm are lost (47.67–68). Saravali 40.40 adds harsh words, anxiety and grief. Jataka Parijata 18.142 adds a twist. Mercury in Virgo but in a weak navamsa brings setbacks at work. The navamsa is the ninth-part chart.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 61–70 (Maharishi ed.); BPHS ch. 3, vv. 11, 18, 49–53 (Maharishi ed.); Saravali, Kalyanavarma, ch. 4, v. 9; Saravali, ch. 40, vv. 37–40, 68; Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 132–143
Mercury mahadasha effects in each house
Jyotish Ratnakar lists Mercury's period house by house. Count the houses from your rising sign (lagna), not from your Moon sign. The text groups the 6th, 8th and 12th together.
| House | What the text says |
|---|---|
| 1st | Authority, farming, fame, honours, good vehicles, holy baths |
| 2nd | Learning, rising fame, fortune like a ruler's, standing at court |
| 3rd | Low energy, poor digestion, loss for brothers; still honour from authority |
| 4th | Losses in home, property and job; sorrow in the mother's family; a move |
| 5th | A hard mind, low work, difficulty earning |
| 6th | Health trouble, fear of authority, fire and theft; the body grows weak |
| 7th | Learning, spouse, children, fine clothes, favour, a title |
| 8th | Same as the 6th |
| 9th | Spouse, children, wealth, success, rites, charity, pilgrimage |
| 10th | Comfort, authority at work, a book in your name, family joy |
| 11th | Money through good work, gifts, farming and trade |
| 12th | As the 6th, plus fear of authority, injury, family disputes and accidents |
Textual basis: Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 331 (Mercury), pp. 810–815
How does Budh mahadasha go from start to finish?
Here the two main books agree. BPHS 47.69–70 gives wealth, learning, children's welfare and honest earnings at the start. Honour from people in power comes in the middle, and sorrow at the end. Jyotish Ratnakar 331 says the same in thirds. Wealth and grain come first. Honour and money from authority come in the middle. The last third brings disagreements with your own people.
One placement reverses this. Jataka Parijata 18.143 and Ratnakar 331 cover a Pisces Mercury in a strong navamsa. Pisces is its weakest sign. It gives nothing at first and good results at the end.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 61–70 (Maharishi ed.); Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 331 (Mercury), pp. 810–815; Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 132–143
Does Budh mahadasha bring success in business and studies?
For a strong Mercury, yes. BPHS 47.64 says plainly that the person earns money from trade. BPHS 47.63 promises more knowledge. Ratnakar 331 names trading in gold, many enterprises, craft skill and a love of learning. Mercury in the 2nd brings learning and fame. In the 10th it brings a book in your name. In the 11th it brings money from trade.
A weak Mercury does not give this. In the 6th, 8th or 12th it eats savings and farm income (BPHS 47.67–68). With harsh planets, Ratnakar 331 gives loss of money, land and farm. So the question is not the period's name but where your Mercury sits.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 61–70 (Maharishi ed.); Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 331 (Mercury), pp. 810–815
Which antardasha in Budh mahadasha is best, and which is hard?
BPHS ch. 58 gives each sub-period a good result when that planet is well placed. It gives a hard one when that planet sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Jataka Parijata 18.133–141 gives one verdict each; the table shows both.
The books split on Mercury–Moon. BPHS 58.26–29 covers a strong Moon with Jupiter looking at it. It gives spouse, children, vehicles and a new house. But Jataka Parijata 18.137, Saravali 41.31 and Phaladeepika 21.61 give illness and losses. Mercury–Ketu is good only with conditions in BPHS 58.6–9 and hard in Phaladeepika 21.58.
| Sub-period | Length | BPHS 58: good / hard | Jataka Parijata 18 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 2y 4m 27d | Strong: learning, fame, a new employer, family joy. Weak: losses, family quarrels, stress from official work | Wealth, favour, success |

| Venus | 2y 10m | Well placed: land, wealth, charity, business profits. Weak: loss of honour, separation | Charity, dharma, money, clothes |
| Sun | 10m 6d | Strong: favour, good fortune, land. In 8/12 with harsh planets: fear of theft and fire | Clothes, jewellery, money, favour |
| Moon | 1y 5m | Strong: spouse, children, vehicles, a new house, study. Weak: fear, losses | Illness, hostility, work ruined |
| Mars | 11m 27d | Strong: lost position regained, house and land. In 8/12: loss of post first, comfort mid-way, fear at the end | Fear removed, fame, favour |
| Rahu | 2y 6m 18d | Well placed: honour, fame, wealth; strain at the start, comfort at the end. In 8/12: loss of post, fear | Friends, money, learning, favour |
| Jupiter | 2y 3m 6d | Strong: wealth, marriage celebrations, scripture, worship. Weak: quarrels, fines, money loss | Wealth and a son, but friction with elders |
| Saturn | 2y 8m 9d | Strong: welfare at home, position, pilgrimage. In 8/12: enemies, family trouble, loss of work | Dharma and wealth, but farm loss |

How antardasha lengths are worked outWhat remedies do the shastras give for a hard Budh period?
BPHS 84 gives Mercury's own worship. Its Vedic mantra is the one beginning Udbudhyasva, repeated 9,000 times (84.17–20). The fire offering uses apamarga wood. Brahmins are fed milk with rice, and the gift is gold (84.21–25). BPHS 3.18 names Vishnu as Mercury's deity.
BPHS ch. 58 adds remedies for hard sub-periods. Vishnu sahasranama, the prayer of Vishnu's thousand names, is for Mercury–Mercury (58.5). Durga japa (repeated prayer to Durga) is for Mercury–Venus and Mercury–Moon. Mercury–Moon adds a gift of cloth (58.19, 58.34–35). Durga and Lakshmi japa is for Mercury–Rahu (58.54). Shiva sahasranama is for Mercury–Jupiter (58.66). Mrityunjaya japa is for Mercury–Mars and Mercury–Saturn (58.46, 58.72). The verses also list animal gifts, which we leave out.

How long is each antardasha in Mercury mahadasha?
A full 17-year period holds nine sub-periods. The first belongs to Mercury itself. Each length is the main period's years × the sub-period's years ÷ 120. The dasha calculator gives your own dates.
| Sub-period | Length | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury (Budh) | 2y 4.9m | 17 × 17 ÷ 120 |
| Ketu | 11.9m | 17 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Venus (Shukra) | 2y 10m | 17 × 20 ÷ 120 |
| Sun (Surya) | 10.2m | 17 × 6 ÷ 120 |
| Moon (Chandra) | 1y 5m | 17 × 10 ÷ 120 |
| Mars (Mangal) | 11.9m | 17 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Rahu | 2y 6.6m | 17 × 18 ÷ 120 |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 2y 3.2m | 17 × 16 ÷ 120 |
| Saturn (Shani) | 2y 8.3m | 17 × 19 ÷ 120 |

Example chart — illustrative, not a real person
How do you find the balance left at birth?
Take the Moon at 113°20′ in Ashlesha. The star spans 106°40′–120°00′. Half remains. Mercury's birth balance is 17 × 0.5 = 8.5 years. Ketu's seven years follow.
These are the texts' results by Mercury's strength; your own chart decides which apply, and a wrong birth time can shift the dates.
Frequently asked
Is retrograde Mercury mahadasha bad?
No, not by the texts. Jyotish Ratnakar 331 gives a retrograde Mercury spouse, children and money. It also brings hearing sacred stories. Saravali 40.68 says a retrograde planet's restless results apply to harsh planets. Mercury is harsh only in harsh company.
What if Mercury is combust or debilitated?
Ratnakar 331 covers Mercury combust, debilitated, or in house 6, 8 or 12. Such a Mercury brings health trouble and loss of savings. Jataka Parijata 18.143 softens a Pisces Mercury in a strong navamsa. The end of the period turns good.
Is Budh mahadasha good for my rising sign?
BPHS 34 makes Mercury helpful for Virgo, Libra and Capricorn rising. It is mildly helpful for Taurus. For Sagittarius it gives success with the Sun. It is difficult for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio and Pisces rising. It is middling for Aquarius (34.20–44).
Does Mercury mahadasha affect the maternal uncle?
Mercury signifies the maternal uncle and the mother's relatives (Phaladeepika 2.4; BPHS 32.20, 32.23). Ratnakar 331 gives sorrow in the mother's family when Mercury sits in the 4th house.
Which mantra is chanted in Budh mahadasha?
BPHS 84.17 gives Mercury's Vedic mantra beginning Udbudhyasva, with 9,000 repetitions (84.19–20).
