What does Saturn mahadasha bring, according to the shastras?
A strong Saturn period gives authority over groups, villages or towns. Respect comes with it (Saravali 40.48-49). Jataka Parijata adds money from leading guilds and towns (18.120). Jyotish Ratnakar says the person grows skilled in crafts and builds temples. The family name rises (para 330).
A weak Saturn period takes away vehicles and parts you from spouse and kin. It brings defeats, quarrels and fatigue (Saravali 40.50-51). Phaladeepika adds ruined farming and life away from home. Land and comfort can be lost suddenly (19.13). Its commentator says that list belongs only to a badly placed Saturn. BPHS calls Saturn the giver of sorrow. It is also the old planet that grants long life (3.13, 3.48). How the 19 years are counted is explained once on the main mahadasha page.
Textual basis: Saravali, Kalyanavarma, ch. 40, vv. 48-51 (Saturn's good and bad period); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 120-131 (Saturn's period); Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 330 (Saturn); Phaladeepika, Mantreshwar, ch. 19, vv. 13, 23 (Saturn's period); BPHS ch. 3, vv. 13, 48-49 (Maharishi ed.)
How mahadasha dates are calculatedWhen does Shani mahadasha give good results?
BPHS gives a clear list. Saturn can be exalted in Libra or sit in Capricorn, Aquarius or a friend's sign. It can sit in the 9th, 3rd or 11th house. Then it gives royal honour, fame, wealth and learning (47.53-55). Saturn may join helpful planets or a yogakaraka. It may sit in a central house, a trine or the 11th. It may sit in Pisces or Sagittarius. Then it gives power and great drive (47.59-60).
The hard list is just as clear. Saturn may sit in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or in Aries. It may be burnt by the Sun. Then it brings loss of position and great fear. It parts you from parents and brings trouble with the state (47.57-58). For Taurus and Libra rising, Saturn rules both a central house and a trine. BPHS makes such a planet a yogakaraka, one that brings success (34.13).
By sign, Jyotish Ratnakar praises five placements. Libra gives great wealth and Sagittarius a minister's role. Pisces makes you lord of towns. Aquarius gives status and farm income, and Taurus honour. It calls Aries a sign of many sorrows. In Capricorn, it says, money comes only with hard work (para 330).
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 52–60 (Maharishi ed.); BPHS ch. 34, v. 13 (Maharishi ed.); Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 330 (Saturn); BPHS ch. 3, vv. 13, 48-49 (Maharishi ed.)
Shani mahadasha effects in each house
Jyotish Ratnakar gives a result for Saturn in each house (para 330). The 3rd and 11th are the good houses, which matches BPHS. It also makes the 10th hard, with loss of post, which BPHS does not say.
| House | What Saturn's period brings (Jyotish Ratnakar) |
|---|---|
| 1st | A weak body, moves, loss of place, trouble from authority |
| 2nd | Money loss, friction with staff, an unsettled mind |
| 3rd | Money and cattle, drive and happiness |
| 4th | Loss of post, worry about home and mother, much roaming |
| 5th | Worry over children, family disputes, fear of authority |
| 6th | Fear from enemies and thieves, poor health, loss of house or land |
| 7th | Heavy strain, poor health, trouble through marriage |
| 8th | Losses of money, cattle and staff; strain for the family |
| 9th | Hard for father and teachers; travel abroad |
| 10th | Loss of post, roaming, anger of those in power |
| 11th | Honour and comfort, a happy family and staff, farm income |
| 12th | Fear of fire and theft, sorrow, life abroad |
Textual basis: Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 330 (Saturn); BPHS ch. 47, vv. 52–60 (Maharishi ed.)
What happens at the start, middle and end of Saturn mahadasha?
BPHS gives no fixed start-middle-end pattern for Saturn. It uses a general rule instead. A planet's sign is split into thirds. The third it sits in sets early, midway or late results. The order flips when it is retrograde (47.3-4). Jyotish Ratnakar does give a pattern. Trouble with siblings and sorrow come first. Travel abroad comes in the middle. At the end you live in other people's homes (para 330).
Two books add a twist. Take Saturn exalted but in its fall navamsa, the ninth-part chart. It is good early and hard late. Saturn in its fall sign but exalted navamsa is the reverse. See Jataka Parijata 18.131 and Jyotish Ratnakar para 330. A retrograde Saturn harms work and ventures (Jyotish Ratnakar para 330). A planet hidden in the Sun's rays is combust. Its period wears down honour, wealth and effort (Saravali 41.57).
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 47, vv. 3-4, when a period's results arrive (Maharishi ed.); Jyotish Ratnakar, paragraph 330 (Saturn); Jataka Parijata, Vaidyanatha, ch. 18, vv. 120-131 (Saturn's period); Saravali, ch. 41, vv. 49-54, 57 (Saturn's sub-periods; a combust planet's period)
Shani mahadasha vs sade sati: what is the difference?
They are two different clocks. Sade sati is Saturn's slow transit over three signs around your Moon sign. These are the 12th, 1st and 2nd from it. It lasts about seven and a half years (Jyotish Ratnakar, p. 869). It comes two or three times in a long life. Shani mahadasha is a fixed 19-year period set by your birth star. It comes at most once (BPHS ch. 46).
The two can overlap, and many people meet one without the other. Read each on its own before reading them together.
Textual basis: Jyotish Ratnakar, transit chapter, p. 869 (sade sati); Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), ch. 46, vv. 3, 12–16 (Maharishi ed.)
Check your sade sati datesWhich antardasha in Shani mahadasha is hardest?
Saravali and Phaladeepika agree here. Saturn-Sun, Saturn-Moon and Saturn-Mars bring fear, loss and leaving home (Saravali 41.49-51; Phaladeepika 21.52-54). Phaladeepika also marks Saturn-Ketu and Saturn-Rahu as hard (21.50, 21.55). BPHS warns that Saturn-Ketu brings loss of position even when Ketu is well placed (57.16-17).
The good ones are Saturn-Mercury, Saturn-Venus and Saturn-Jupiter. They bring honour, friends, family comfort and more grain. See Saravali 41.52-54 and Phaladeepika 21.49, 21.51, 21.56. Saturn-Saturn opens the period with farming gains and more staff, but also laziness (Phaladeepika 21.48).
| Sub-period | Length | Well placed | Badly placed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn-Saturn | 3y 0m 3d | Own sign, Libra, central house or trine: power, family growth, land (57.1-3) | 8th/12th or weak: fear of authority early, leaving home midway, good at the end (57.4-6) |
| Saturn-Mercury | 2y 8m 9d | Honour, fame, learning, business gains (57.8-11) | 6th/8th/12th or weak: good at first, then illness and failed work (57.12-14) |
| Saturn-Ketu | 1y 1m 9d | With the rising-sign lord: early comfort, holy baths (57.18-19) | Loss of position and great fear even when well placed; worse in 8th/12th (57.16-17, 57.20-22) |
| Saturn-Venus | 3y 2m | Spouse, children, money, health, favour (57.24-27) | 6th/8th/12th or weak: mental strain, loss of place, quarrels (57.28-29) |
| Saturn-Sun | 11m 12d | With the 9th lord: favour from superiors, a prosperous home (57.37-38) | 1st/8th/12th: loss of honour and post, separation, ventures fail (57.39-41) |
| Saturn-Moon | 1y 7m | Full Moon with Jupiter's aspect: favour, comfort, staff to look after (57.43-45) | Waning or with harsh planets: anger of authority, money loss, distance from parents (57.46-48) |
| Saturn-Mars | 1y 1m 9d | Central house or trine: early comfort, command, farm gains, new building (57.55-57) | Weak or 8th/12th: money loss, family disputes, costly travel (57.58-60) |
| Saturn-Rahu | 2y 10m 6d | With the rising-sign lord or a yogakaraka: early wealth and pilgrimage, fear midway (57.65-67) | Quarrels, mental pain, fear of authority, travel (57.63-64) |
| Saturn-Jupiter | 2y 6m 12d | All aims met, honour, learned company (57.71-73) | 6th/8th/12th or weak: losses, disputes at work, loss of a job (57.74-76) |
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 57, including vv. 7, 11, 15 (Maharishi ed.); Saravali, ch. 41, vv. 49-54, 57 (Saturn's sub-periods; a combust planet's period); Phaladeepika, ch. 21 (antardasha results; situation rule v. 84)
What remedies do the texts give for Shani mahadasha?
BPHS ch. 57 gives a remedy for each hard sub-period. Mrityunjaya japa, a repeated prayer to Shiva, is named for Saturn-Saturn and Saturn-Rahu (vv. 7, 70). Saturn-Mercury gets the Vishnu Sahasranama and food-giving (v. 15). Saturn-Venus gets Durga japa (v. 35), and Saturn-Sun gets Sun worship (v. 42).
For Saturn-Moon, BPHS orders a sesame fire offering with jaggery, ghee, curd and rice (vv. 53-54). Saturn-Mars gets a peace fire ritual (v. 62). Saturn-Jupiter gets the Shiva Sahasranama and a gift of gold (v. 82). We leave out the animal gifts some verses add.
Jyotish Ratnakar names an iron vessel as the gift for a harmful Saturn period. Its gift list is urad, oil, sesame, kulthi, iron and black cloth. Saturn's mantra is repeated 23,000 times. It warns that wearing blue sapphire sometimes does harm (pp. 913-917).

How long is each antardasha in Saturn mahadasha?
A full 19-year period holds nine sub-periods. The first belongs to Saturn itself. Each length is the main period's years × the sub-period's years ÷ 120. The dasha calculator gives your own dates.
| Sub-period | Length | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn (Shani) | 3y 0.1m | 19 × 19 ÷ 120 |
| Mercury (Budh) | 2y 8.3m | 19 × 17 ÷ 120 |
| Ketu | 1y 1.3m | 19 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Venus (Shukra) | 3y 2m | 19 × 20 ÷ 120 |
| Sun (Surya) | 11.4m | 19 × 6 ÷ 120 |
| Moon (Chandra) | 1y 7m | 19 × 10 ÷ 120 |
| Mars (Mangal) | 1y 1.3m | 19 × 7 ÷ 120 |
| Rahu | 2y 10.2m | 19 × 18 ÷ 120 |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 2y 6.4m | 19 × 16 ÷ 120 |

Example chart — illustrative, not a real person
How do you find the balance left at birth?
Take the Moon at 10° Scorpio, or 220° sidereal longitude. Anuradha spans 213°20′–226°40′. The Moon is halfway through the star. Half of Saturn's 19 years remains: 19 × 0.5 = 9.5 years. Mercury's 17 years come next. This is not 10° into Anuradha; it is 10° into Scorpio.
These are the texts' rules; your own birth chart and an accurate birth time decide which of them apply to you.
Frequently asked
Is Shani mahadasha bad for everyone?
No. BPHS gives royal honour, fame and wealth for a well-placed Saturn. That means Libra, its own signs or a friend's sign. Or the 3rd, 9th or 11th house (47.53-55). The harsh results belong to Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th. They also belong to Saturn in Aries or too close to the Sun (47.57-58).
How long is Shani mahadasha?
19 years in full; only Venus's period, at 20, is longer. It starts at birth only for a Moon in Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada. See BPHS ch. 46. It opens with Saturn-Saturn, about 3 years, and ends with Saturn-Jupiter.
Is Shani mahadasha good for career?
In BPHS a strong Saturn period is a strong career period. It gives royal honour, a commander's favour and raja yoga (47.53-55). Jyotish Ratnakar gives an exalted Saturn charge of villages and assemblies (para 330). It also says Saturn in the 10th can bring loss of post instead.
Can Shani mahadasha and sade sati come together?
Yes. They are separate clocks and can overlap. Sade sati follows Saturn's transit over your Moon sign (Jyotish Ratnakar, p. 869), while the mahadasha follows your birth star. Check Saturn's strength in your birth chart before reading the overlap as bad.
Should I wear blue sapphire in Shani mahadasha?
BPHS ch. 57 prescribes japa, fire offerings and gifts, not gemstones. Jyotish Ratnakar lists blue sapphire as a gift item. It warns that wearing it sometimes harms (p. 914).
What comes after Shani mahadasha?
Mercury's 17-year period follows, opening with Mercury-Mercury. The calculator above shows the exact changeover date for your chart.
