What is the upapada lagna, in plain words?
Upapada lagna, shortened to UL, is the sign that mirrors your twelfth house. Arudha pada means a house's visible reflection. BPHS ch. 30 defines upapada from the twelfth. It is read for married life and the spouse. It is not the rising sign and it is not the seventh house itself.
Start from the birth rising sign. That tells you which sign is the twelfth house. Find the planet ruling that sign and where it sits. A short counting rule then gives UL. The calculator uses the same birth chart as the other Vedic tools. It does not ask you to guess a marriage sign.
Finding the sign and reading it are two steps. Finding Scorpio as UL is one fact. Reading the planets on that sign and the next sign is another. A sign name alone cannot tell a spouse's looks or a wedding date.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 29, vv. 1–7 (Maharishi ed.); BPHS ch. 30, vv. 1–10 (Maharishi ed.)
How do you calculate upapada lagna step by step?
First identify the twelfth-house sign. Next find its ruling planet in the birth chart. Count signs from the twelfth to that planet, including both ends. Count the same number forward from the planet, again including the starting sign. The resulting sign is the first answer. Then apply the exception before accepting it.
Inclusive counting means the starting sign counts as one. Pisces to Cancer is five: Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer. Cancer to Scorpio is also five. Counting only the gaps gives four and leads to the wrong result. Count signs, not degrees. A planet early or late in Cancer still sits in Cancer for this step.
Use the birth chart's signs for this count, not the marriage (navamsa) chart. If another tool disagrees, compare its starting house first. Then compare its choice of ruling planet. Then check the counting and the exception.

What is the exception when the count lands in the 12th house or the 7th from it?
The answer cannot be the original house or the sign opposite it. Our calculator then takes the tenth sign from that first answer. Count inclusively. Tenth from Pisces is Sagittarius. Tenth from Virgo is Gemini. Count the ten from the first answer, not from the twelfth house.
BPHS 29.4–5 gives the same result in its own words. If the ruling planet sits fourth from the house, the pada is that fourth sign. If it sits seventh from the house, the pada is the tenth. Take Aries rising with Jupiter in Pisces. The first answer is Pisces itself. The corrected UL is Sagittarius.
There is a second exception shape. With the twelfth in Pisces and Jupiter in Gemini, the first answer is Virgo. Virgo is seventh from Pisces, so take the tenth from Virgo: Gemini. The rule changes the sign count. It does not move the birth planet.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 29, vv. 1–7 (Maharishi ed.); BPHS ch. 30, vv. 1–10 (Maharishi ed.)
Which lord do you use when the 12th is Scorpio or Aquarius (two lords)?
Scorpio and Aquarius each have two rulers. Scorpio has Mars and Ketu. Aquarius has Saturn and Rahu. BPHS 29.7 says to use the stronger of the two. Our calculator uses Mars for Scorpio and Saturn for Aquarius. It does not weigh them against Ketu or Rahu.
So if your twelfth is Scorpio or Aquarius, check the ruler first. A tool that picks Ketu or Rahu can give a different UL. Note which ruler was used before comparing results.

What does the upapada lagna say about your marriage?
BPHS 30.3–4 gives full happiness from spouse and children in one case. UL sits in a helpful planet's sign, with helpful planets on it or aspecting it. Harmful planets in a harmful sign there bring renunciation or a life without a spouse. BPHS 30.5 adds that a helpful planet's aspect or company cancels this.
BPHS 30.6 makes one exception for the Sun. In its own, exalted or a friendly sign, the Sun is not harmful here. In a fallen or enemy sign it does count as harmful. Helpful and harmful are traditional planet groups, not judgements about people.
UL is one marriage factor. The seventh house and its ruler supply another. Planetary periods supply the timing. Use the free calculator to find the sign first. Then read its sign, ruler and the planets around it together.
Textual basis: BPHS ch. 30, vv. 1–10 (Maharishi ed.)
Why is the 2nd house from the upapada so important?
The second sign is the next sign after UL, counted with UL as one. For Scorpio UL, Sagittarius is second. BPHS 30.7 says helpful planets there keep the marriage happy. BPHS 30.8 covers a second sign holding fallen or harsh planets. It brings loss of the spouse. Jyotish Ratnakar p. 279 repeats the same rule.
BPHS 30.9 says exalted planets in the second sign bring more than one marriage. BPHS 30.10 says the same when UL or its second sign is Gemini. These are the text's rules. Whether one applies depends on the whole chart, including helpful aspects.

Upapada vs 7th house vs darakaraka: what is the difference?
The seventh house is the birth chart's direct partnership area. UL is the twelfth house's reflected sign. Darakaraka is the spouse planet, chosen as the planet with the lowest degree. They are different constructions. A7, the seventh house's reflected sign, is not UL. UL is A12, the twelfth house's reflection.
The calculator shows related Jaimini factors together. That does not make them the same thing. Write each one on its own line: seventh ruler, UL sign and spouse planet. Merging them into one label loses information. The marriage-period page covers timing, which is separate from this sign.
Do you need an exact birth time?
Yes. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours. That is an approximate guide, not a constant speed everywhere. A shift in rising sign changes the twelfth house and can change UL. This makes birth time especially important here. A date without a time cannot reliably set the starting house.
If the time is remembered rather than recorded, say so. Test the earliest and latest likely times. See whether the rising sign and UL stay the same. A result that holds across the range is more reliable. Do not invent an exact time to hide the difference. Find the birth record or keep the doubt visible.
Example chart — illustrative, not a real person
Aries rising: how do the normal count and exception differ?
Normal example: Aries rises, so the twelfth is Pisces. Jupiter sits in Cancer. Pisces to Cancer counts five signs. The fifth sign from Cancer is Scorpio. The answer is neither Pisces nor Virgo, so UL stays Scorpio. Our calculator gives Scorpio too.
Exception example: keep Aries rising but put Jupiter in Pisces. Pisces to Pisces counts one. Counting one from Jupiter returns Pisces. That is the original house, so take the tenth from Pisces: Sagittarius. Our calculator gives Sagittarius too.
To try the normal example, enter Delhi, 1 August 2002, 00:00 (Indian time). The calculator shows Aries rising and Jupiter in Cancer. UL is Scorpio. For the exception, enter Delhi, 1 February 1999, 00:00. The calculator shows Aries rising and Jupiter in Pisces. UL is Sagittarius. Changing the date rebuilds the whole chart, not just Jupiter.
Midnight begins the stated day. Do not treat 00:00 on 1 February as the previous evening. Check the rising sign and Jupiter's sign first. Then check UL. That order shows whether a difference comes from the counting or from the chart itself.
Reliable birth time matters. One marriage factor alone does not guarantee a personal outcome.
Frequently asked
Which house supplies upapada?
The twelfth house. UL is A12, not the seventh house's A7.
Do I count the first sign?
Yes. Include both ends. Pisces to Cancer counts five.
Where does the exception's ten-sign count start?
At the first answer. If it is the original house or its opposite, take the tenth sign from it.
Does the calculator use Rahu for Aquarius?
No. It uses Saturn for Aquarius and Mars for Scorpio. BPHS 29.7 says to take the stronger of two rulers.
Does UL give a wedding date?
Not alone. It describes married life. Timing also reads the periods and related planets.
Does birth time matter?
Yes. A changed rising sign can change the twelfth house and UL.
