What is manglik dosha, exactly?
Manglik dosha is a marriage check on where Mars sits. It applies when Mars is in house 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12. We count these houses three times. We count from the rising sign, from the Moon and from Venus. Each count is a separate check. Your result shows all three, so you can see which ones fired.
The worry has old roots. Saravali 34.46 says harmful planets in the seventh hurt the marriage. It counts that seventh from the rising sign or the Moon, whichever is stronger. Saravali 34.50 says Mars in the seventh keeps a man apart from his wife. Phaladeepika 10.3 names Mars in Pisces in the seventh as harmful to the spouse. The same verse says Mars with Saturn in Cancer there gives a loyal, beautiful wife.
The modern six-house list is wider than these verses. No classical verse is quoted here for the full list. It is the rule families use today, and our calculator follows it.
Write the check in three lines. The first is Mars's house from the rising sign. The second counts from the Moon. The third counts from Venus. Mark each against the six-house list. Write any exception underneath. This shows whether a mild result came from one flag or from an exception.
Textual basis: Saravali, ch. 34, vv. 46–51; Phaladeepika, ch. 10, v. 3
Which cancellations soften manglik dosha?
Our calculator applies five exceptions. The first is Mars in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn. The second is Jupiter in the same sign as Mars. The third is Jupiter's aspect falling on Mars. An aspect is the influence a planet casts on another sign. Jupiter casts it on the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself. The fourth is the Moon in the same sign as Mars. The fifth is Mars in the 2nd house when that house is Gemini or Virgo.
The 2nd-house exception counts from the rising sign only. The Jupiter exception needs Jupiter to act on Mars. A strong Jupiter somewhere else in the chart does not count. Venus, Saturn and friendly-sign shortcuts are not applied either.
Our calculator treats these as traditional exceptions. Any one of them lowers the severity to mild. None of them removes the Manglik result. BPHS 80.47 backs the Jupiter exceptions. The others come from tradition.

Does manglik dosha cancel if both partners are manglik?
Many families accept a match when both partners are Manglik. This is a pair rule. One chart cannot test it. The calculator on this page reads one chart only. For a pair, both people need accurate birth details and a matching check.
BPHS 80.48-49 states this rule. The same Mars placement in a man's chart harms the wife. When such a man marries such a woman, the harm is cancelled.
Two Manglik people are not forbidden from marrying. A matching check reads this rule along with the rest of both charts. Comparing two severity words alone tells you very little. Use kundli matching, which compares the two charts properly.

Compare both chartsDoes manglik dosha end at age 28?
No. The age-28 belief is a popular custom. The classical texts cited here do not support it. Where Mars sat at your birth never changes. So your Manglik result is the same at 18, 28 or 48.
What does change with age is your running planetary period. That is a different question. The dasha calculator answers it, and Mars's own seven-year period has its own page.
Which house placement is strongest?
The classical verses on this page speak of Mars in the seventh. Saravali 34.50 and Phaladeepika 10.3 both name the seventh house. Many families also treat Mars in the eighth as serious.
Our calculator does not weigh one house above another. Its severity depends on how many of the three checks fire. No flags means none. One flag means mild. Two flags with no exception means medium. Three flags with no exception means high. Any exception makes a flagged result mild.
So a seventh-house Mars can still show as mild. Read which house fired, not just the severity word.
Textual basis: Saravali, ch. 34, vv. 46–51; Phaladeepika, ch. 10, v. 3
What remedies are traditionally done?
The calculator lists common Tuesday practices. They are the Hanuman Chalisa and a gift of red lentils (masoor dal). The third is water offered to a peepal tree. Medium and high results also suggest a Mangal Shanti puja with a qualified priest. These are customs, not verses from the texts cited here.
Start by reading your result and its exceptions. If you still worry, get a proper check of both charts. Do not buy a remedy out of fear. No ritual changes where Mars sat at your birth.
Example chart — illustrative, not a real person
How do Aries Mars and seventh-house Cancer Mars differ?
Example A: Mars sits in Aries in the first house. The first-house check fires. Aries is Mars's own sign, so the exception applies too. The result is Manglik, mild. It is not fully cleared.
Example B: Mars sits in Cancer in the seventh house. Cancer is neither Mars's own nor its exalted sign. The seventh-house check fires without that exception. The final level also depends on the Moon, Venus and Jupiter. Run the calculator above to see them.
One Mars placement does not decide a marriage. Check both charts with accurate details.
Frequently asked
Which houses are flagged?
Houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12. They are counted from the rising sign, the Moon and Venus.
Does Aries Mars clear the flag?
No. Mars in its own sign lowers the result to mild. The chart is still Manglik.
Is Jupiter's influence checked?
Yes. Jupiter in Mars's sign counts. So does Jupiter's aspect on Mars.
Is mutual Manglik checked here?
No. This tool reads one chart. Use kundli matching to check both charts.
Does the dosha end at 28?
No. That is a popular custom. The classical texts cited here do not support it.
Is there a verse for each cancellation?
Not for all. BPHS 80.47 backs the Jupiter exceptions. The others come from tradition.
