Karva Chauth 2026

करवा चौथ

The nirjala vrata observed by married women on Kartika Krishna Chaturthi (Amanta) — approximately eleven days before Diwali — for the longevity of their husbands. The fast is kept without food or water from before sunrise until moonrise, when the moon is sighted through a sieve and arghya is offered. The vrata-katha is preserved in the Skanda Purana; the karva — a clay water pot exchanged between women — gives the festival its name.
