Choose my cityThe word Ekadashi means “eleven” in Sanskrit — it names the eleventh lunar day in each paksha. The Padma Purana and Vishnu Purana prescribe fasting on Ekadashi as a primary vaishnava observance: devotees abstain from grains, observe prayer, and break the fast on the following Dwadashi at a prescribed time (parana). The most significant Ekadashis of the year are Nirjala (the waterless fast in Jyeshtha), Devshayani (when Vishnu enters yoganidra), and Prabodhini (when he awakens in Kartik).
Ekadashi falls on the 11th tithi of both Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and Krishna Paksha (waning moon) every lunar month — 24 times per solar year. Each Ekadashi carries its own name, mythology and prescribed fast. The dates shift with the panchang and vary slightly by city due to local sunrise.
