Eclipse Calendar — ग्रहण
Solar eclipses (Surya Grahan) occur on Amavasya when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun. Lunar eclipses (Chandra Grahan) occur on Purnima when Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. The Vedic tradition prescribes specific observances during the eclipse and a purificatory bath after. Visibility and timing vary by city.

Grahan in the Vedic calendar
The Surya Siddhanta and Brahmasphutasiddhanta describe eclipse computation in detail — shadow calculations, duration, and the nodes Rahu and Ketu as the causal agents. Classical practice prescribes: beginning a fast at the onset of the eclipse (or 9 ghatis prior for solar eclipses), abstaining from food and sleep, performing japa and tarpan during totality, and bathing immediately after the release (moksha). The engine computes eclipse data from the Swiss Ephemeris and identifies visibility from the given city.
