Yogas and Their Sources

The combinations the chart actually forms, each with the classical verse it rests on.

Gajakesari Yoga

Moon · Jupiter

Jupiter sits in the 4th from the Moon - a quadrant - forming the classical Moon-Jupiter Gajakesari of wisdom and lasting reputation. Genuine but moderate here: Jupiter is retrograde and only neutrally placed in Gemini.

When Jupiter occupies a quadrant (kendra) reckoned from the Moon, the Gajakesari Yoga is formed: the native becomes wise, wealthy, of lasting fame and esteemed by rulers. (Standard BPHS / Phaladeepika formulation.)
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra - Yoga Adhyaya (chapter on yogas) (Gajakesari: Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon)

Raja Yoga - Mars (4th and 9th lord, own sign)

Mars

For Leo lagna Mars rules both a quadrant (4th) and a trine (9th) and sits in its own sign Aries in the 9th. A single planet owning a kendra and a trikona is itself a Raja Yoga - the chart's strongest, in the house of fortune and purpose.

If the lord of a quadrant (kendra) and the lord of a trine (trikona) be related - by being one and the same planet, by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange - a Raja Yoga is produced, conferring authority and high status. (Parashara's kendra-trikona Raja Yoga principle.)
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra - Raja Yoga Adhyaya (chapter on Raja Yogas) (kendra-trikona lordship)

Raja Yoga - Venus and Jupiter (by aspect)

Venus · Jupiter

The 10th lord of career (Venus) and the 5th lord of creativity (Jupiter) stand opposite each other across the 5th-11th axis in mutual aspect - a quadrant-trine Raja Yoga linking career to original creative work.

A kendra lord associating with a trikona lord by mutual aspect likewise forms a Raja Yoga. (Here the 10th lord Venus and 5th lord Jupiter aspect each other across the 5th-11th axis.)
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra - Raja Yoga Adhyaya (chapter on Raja Yogas) (kendra-trikona association by aspect)

Sunapha Yoga

Mars

Mars - a planet other than the Sun - occupies the 2nd from the Moon, forming Sunapha: the mark of self-acquired wealth, intelligence and renown. A self-made fortune, not an inherited one.

हित्वार्कं सुनफानफादुरुधुराः स्वान्त्योभयस्थेग्रहिः शीतांशोः ॥

If a planet other than the Sun occupies the 2nd house from the Moon, the Sunapha Yoga arises: the native is possessed of self-acquired property, will be a king or resemble a king, a person of intelligence, wealth and renown.
Brihat Jataka - Ch. XIII - On Chandra Yogas (Lunar Yogas)

Vasi Yoga

Mercury

Mercury stands in the 12th from the Sun, forming the solar yoga Vasi - drive, influence and a forward-leaning, persuasive will.

हित्वेन्दुं शुभवेसिवास्युभयचर्याख्याः

When a planet other than the Moon stands in the 12th from the Sun, the Vasi Yoga is formed, giving the native eloquence, drive, influence and a resourceful, persuasive nature.
Phaladeepika - Ch. VI - On Yogas (solar Vesi / Vasi / Ubhayachari)

Veena Yoga (Nabhasa)

Sun · Moon · Mars · Mercury · Jupiter · Venus · Saturn

All seven planets fall in seven distinct signs, forming the Veena (Vallaki) Nabhasa yoga - classically the mark of one fond of art, music and song, skilled and discerning.

When the seven planets occupy seven different signs the Veena (Vallaki) Yoga is formed; the person so born is fond of dance, song and instruments, skilled, wealthy and happy.
Brihat Jataka - Ch. XII - On Nabhasa Yogas (Sankhya / Vallaki)

Vargottama - Jupiter and Venus

Jupiter · Venus

Jupiter and Venus each hold the same sign in the birth chart (D1) and the navamsha (D9) - the vargottama condition, which classically strengthens a planet as if it were in its own sign. His two great benefics - wisdom and beauty - are doubly anchored.

वर्गोत्तमाश्चरगृहादिषु पूर्वमध्यपर्यन्तगा: शुभफला नवभागसंज्ञा:

A planet occupying the same sign in the rasi and in the navamsha is termed vargottama and gives results as powerful as a planet in its own house. (Confirmed for Jupiter and Venus in this chart.)
Phaladeepika - Ch. III - On Divisions (vargottama navamsha, quoting Brihat Jataka)

The Dasha Timeline

जीवन-यात्रा

A Life in the Stars

  1. 1976

Co-founds Apple with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne on 1 April 1976 to sell Wozniak's Apple I, aged 21. source

Ketu mahadasha (1975-1982), Ketu-Venus antardasha. Ketu favours sudden, unconventional ventures; the Venus sub-period activates the lord of the 10th house of career, placed in the 5th of creativity - the career-creativity significator switched on just as the venture began.

In nineteen seventy-six, under the period of Ketu - the planet of restless, unconventional beginnings - and a sub-period of Venus, the lord of his career placed in the house of creativity, a twenty-one-year-old Jobs founded Apple with Steve Wozniak in his parents' garage.

  2. 1980

Apple goes public on 12 December 1980 - 4.6 million shares at twenty-two dollars - making Jobs a multimillionaire at 25. source

Ketu mahadasha, Ketu-Saturn antardasha. Ketu's emphasis falls on the 11th house of gains, while the sub-lord, exalted Saturn in the 3rd house of commerce, classically brings 'eventual success in business'.

By December nineteen eighty, still in Ketu's period of gains and a sub-period of his exalted Saturn - the planet of disciplined commerce - Apple's stock-market debut made the young founder a multimillionaire almost overnight.

  3. 1984

Introduces the Macintosh 128K on 24 January 1984, the first mass-market computer with a graphical interface. source

Venus mahadasha (1982-2002), Venus-Venus antardasha. The planet of beauty and design - and his career lord - in its own pure sub-period, delivering the product that made design the point.

In nineteen eighty-four, in the pure season of Venus - the planet of design itself, and the ruler of his career - the Macintosh arrived and rewrote what a personal computer could be.

  4. 1985

Forced out of Apple by CEO John Sculley in September 1985; founds NeXT the same year. source

Venus mahadasha, Venus-Sun antardasha. The sub-lord is the Sun - the ego and the self - placed in the 7th house of partners and the boardroom, against a backdrop of Rahu in his 5th and the reversal-prone Moon in his 8th.

In nineteen eighty-five, as the sub-period of the Sun - his own ego-planet, sitting in the seventh house of partners and boardrooms - took hold, the self collided with the company: pushed out of the firm he had founded, Jobs immediately began again with NeXT.

  5. 1986-1995

Buys the computer-graphics group that becomes Pixar in 1986; Toy Story, the first computer-animated feature, opens 22 November 1995, days before Pixar's IPO. source

Pixar's purchase falls in Venus-Sun; Toy Story and the IPO in Venus-Saturn. The whole arc runs under Venus, the planet of art and image, with exalted Saturn supplying the disciplined craft that turned it into a second fortune.

Through the late eighties and nineties, under Venus the planet of art, Jobs built Pixar - and in nineteen ninety-five, as his exalted Saturn took the sub-period, Toy Story and its public offering proved that beauty and storytelling were themselves a kind of technology.

  6. 1997

Apple acquires NeXT and Jobs returns in 1997, soon becoming interim CEO of a near-bankrupt Apple. source

Venus mahadasha, Venus-Saturn antardasha. Venus as career lord closes its long period by bringing the career full circle, while exalted Saturn supplies the disciplined turnaround - with retrograde Jupiter in Punarvasu, the star of 'return', as a fitting backdrop.

In nineteen ninety-seven, as his career lord Venus closed its twenty-year chapter alongside disciplined Saturn, Jobs returned to a failing Apple - and the comeback the eighth house always promised began.

  7. 2007

Unveils the iPhone at Macworld on 9 January 2007; it ships on 29 June, redefining the mobile phone. source

Sun mahadasha (2002-2008). The Sun is his lagna lord - the planet of the self and the sovereign - placed in the 7th house of the public and the market. Under his own ruling planet, in the Aquarian sign of technology, personal vision became a global standard.

In two thousand and seven, under the period of the Sun - his own chart-ruler, the planet of kingship, set in the seventh house of the marketplace - Jobs unveiled the iPhone, and one man's vision reshaped how the whole world communicates.

  8. 2011

Resigns as Apple CEO in August 2011 and dies of pancreatic-cancer complications on 5 October 2011. source

Moon mahadasha (2008-2018), Moon-Jupiter antardasha. The Moon rules the 12th house of endings and release and sits in the 8th house of mortality - the house from which the classics judge longevity. Multiple Vedic readers point to exactly this 12th-lord-in-the-8th signature for the close of his life.

In twenty eleven, under the Moon - ruler of his twelfth house of release, set in the eighth house of endings - Jobs stepped down in August and passed that October, the chart's quietest signature closing a loud life.

स्वभाव

Character in the Chart

The inventor's mind

Sun in Aquarius (Shatabhisha) in the 7th house

Vedic astrology places his Sun not in dreamy Pisces but in Aquarius - Saturn's sign of new ideas and invention - in the nakshatra of Shatabhisha, the 'hundred healers', the star of inventors, outsiders and those who hide their workings behind a veil. Published Vedic readings note that an Aquarius Sun makes a person 'innovative and original in thinking... successful in areas of science and technology', strong in intelligence and memory even though the Sun sits in an enemy's sign. Placed in the 7th house of the public and the marketplace, the self was forged in front of an audience: identity expressed through what he put into the world's hands - and famously veiled in secrecy about how it was made.

Relentless craft

Saturn exalted in Libra in the 3rd house

Saturn is exalted - at its most disciplined and exacting - in the 3rd house of skill, the hands and self-driven effort, an 'upachaya' house where Saturn only grows stronger with time. Classical and published readings agree this makes 'a profound and deep thinker, very well organized and disciplined', giving disciplined success in craft and commerce where 'promotions arrive late but last long'. This is the signature of the perfectionist: the obsession with how a thing is made, the curve of a corner, the inside of a case no customer would ever see - and the long arc from exile to the most valuable company on earth.

The creative fire

Venus (10th lord, Atmakaraka) with Rahu in the 5th house

Venus - the planet of beauty and design, here the lord of the 10th house of career and the chart's Atmakaraka or 'soul significator' - sits in the 5th house of creativity alongside Rahu, the planet of obsessive amplification. Because Venus is both the career lord and the soul-planet, beauty was never decoration for him; it was the agenda. Rahu's company in the root-tearing nakshatra of Mula explains the intensity: an insatiable hunger to make the next thing more elegant than the last, even if it meant tearing down his own best work to do it.

Reinvention through rupture

Moon (12th lord) in the 8th house

The Moon - ruler of his 12th house of loss and release - occupies the 8th house, the classical house of sudden reversals, deep transformation and rebirth, and the house from which the ancients judged longevity itself. Lives with this placement rarely run in a straight line; they fall and are remade. It is the astrological fingerprint of the man who was thrown out of his own company and came back to build its greatest era - and, as several Vedic readers note, the same 12th-lord-in-the-8th signature that shadowed his health.

Mission, not just ambition

Mars in own sign Aries in the 9th house

Mars sits in its own sign in the 9th house of dharma, fortune and higher purpose - and rules both a quadrant and a trine, making it the chart's strongest source of Raja Yoga. This is drive harnessed to a sense of mission rather than mere ambition: the crusading conviction to 'put a ding in the universe', the willingness to fight, the framing of products as a cause. Strong, dignified Mars in the house of higher purpose describes a will that answers to a vision before it answers to a market.

A name that outlives the maker

Sunapha and Gajakesari yogas; Jupiter in the 11th house

Two classical lunar yogas frame his fortune. Sunapha - a planet in the 2nd from the Moon - is the mark of 'self-acquired property... intelligence, wealth and renown', a fortune built from nothing rather than inherited. Gajakesari, the Moon-Jupiter yoga, promises lasting reputation. And Jupiter in the 11th house of gains and networks earns, in the words of the sage Bhrigu, the titles 'learned, wealthy, and abundant in gains'. Together they describe work - and a name - that outlives its maker.

आगे की राह

The Road Ahead

  • The chart's enduring signature is the marriage of exalted Saturn's discipline with Venus's sense of beauty - the reason his work still sets the benchmark for design a generation later.
  • Aquarius - Saturn's sign of the inventor who serves the many - frames a legacy measured less in personal wealth than in tools placed into billions of hands.
  • Gajakesari and Sunapha promise renown and a lasting name even where the eighth-house Moon shortened the life: a chart that traded longevity for legend.
