केरल के दस दिवसीय कटाई त्योहार का मुख्य दिन (थिरुवोणम) — मलयालम सौर महीने चिंगम (जब सूर्य सिंह राशि में होता है) के दौरान श्रवण नक्षत्र पर पड़ता है। यह त्योहार राजा महाबली के अपनी प्रजा से मिलने की वार्षिक वापसी की याद है; भागवत पुराण (8.15–23) में विष्णु के वामन अवतार और इस वरदान के देने का वर्णन है। उत्सव में ओणसद्य — केले के पत्ते पर परोसे जाने वाले छब्बीस व्यंजनों तक का शाकाहारी भोज — पूकलम फूलों की रचनाएँ, और वल्लम कली सर्प-नौका दौड़ शामिल हैं।
